The process of giving birth to twins is no different from giving birth to a single baby, but giving birth to twins carries a higher risk of complications. Often some twins require supervision in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) or incentive care room after birth.

It's certainly nice to see more than one tiny baby with similar faces, wearing identical clothes and even accessories that support the appearance. The arrival of twins will definitely give a different impression to each couple, ranging from happy, surprised, to touched. But whatever you feel, the arrival of twins must definitely be prepared extra than the usual pregnancy.

Although not all twin births require a Nicu room, only babies who have risk factors usually require intensive supervision.

What are the Risks to Twin Pregnant Babies ?

Giving birth to twins has a higher risk than a singleton pregnancy because more effort and energy will be used during pregnancy. The more fetuses that are conceived, the higher the risk of pregnancy.

As prospective parents, it is good to know the risks that can occur in twins during pregnancy:

1. Growth disorders

Twin babies have a higher risk of experiencing growth disorders in the womb. This can be due to several factors such as the inability of the mother's body to provide sufficient oxygen intake for both or more babies. As a result, the babies' growth can be stunted and can often be born smaller than normal in size and weight or even physically injured.

2. Congenital diseases

Next, twins have a higher risk of congenital diseases. This can happen if the babies' growth while in the womb is not met properly, causing health problems, such as congenital heart disease, respiratory diseases, eye disorders, and other congenital diseases.

3. Vanishing twin syndrome

Vanishing twin syndrome is a disorder where one of the fetuses of the twins miscarries. This disorder can be caused by several factors such as chromosomal abnormalities that cause one of the babies to not develop properly, umbilical cord disorders, placental disorders, which inhibit one of the baby's growth, and the dominance of one of the fetuses in identical twin pregnancies.

4. Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome or TTTS is a disorder that occurs in identical twin pregnancies where one of the babies does not get balanced blood flow so that it inhibits the growth, development, of one of the babies. This condition can lead to the death of one of the babies.

Can Twins be Born Prematurely ?

One of the other risks that can be obtained from giving birth to twins is premature birth. Although not all twin pregnancies have to be born prematurely, 60% of twin cases are known to be born prematurely.

This can happen due to many factors, such as problems with the mother's blood pressure, placenta, premature rupture of membranes, and many other factors. Twins born prematurely will usually require treatment in the NICU room in order to develop properly before they can finally be brought home by their parents.

What Should Mothers Do to Babies When Pregnant with Twins ?

There are several things that can be done to prevent these risks. Preferably, the preparation is done since the beginning of pregnancy and as early as possible to reduce these risks can occur, these things are:

  •     Maintain the body's nutritional balance.
  •     Meeting the body's fluid needs.
  •     Doing physical activity.
  •     Routinely consulting with an obstetrician.

In addition, ensuring the physical and mental health of the mother will also be very important in the continuity of twin pregnancy. Giving birth to twins may require a lot of preparation and greater mental, but know that afterward will be blessed with 2 or more hearts into life with a partner.

Know that no matter how many fetuses are conceived, all forms of pregnancy need to be carefully planned for a smooth delivery process. Therefore, make sure to regularly consult with an obstetrician to anticipate any unexpected things during pregnancy.

The NICU room is a room intended for comprehensive and strict supervision to ensure the development of the baby after birth, especially in the first week of birth. Family group Mother and Child Hospital has a NICU care center for the care of newborns with special needs.
